Naota Nandaba:  Naota is the main character of FLCL.  Often plagued by the little "accidents" of Haruko, Naota often has interesting things sprout from his head.  As the series continues, it is discovered that Naota can control the first of his creations, Kanchi, and uses him to defeat the bad robots and save his friends from all sorts of dangers.

Haruko Haruhara:  Being an alien and at times a complete psychopath, Haruka prooves herself to be a danger to all who come within fifteen feet of her!  Her fate is first met with Naota when she runs him down on her scooter on a bridge, stirring the first of several dangerous robots.  From then on, she hunts down Naota, hitting him with her electric guitar, yellow scooter, or just bare hands, coaxing the robots out of him in often very painful ways.  For some reason, the Interstellar Immigration group is trying to hunt her down!

Mamimi Samejimi: This girl is a high school student and a little odd to say the least.  Now that Naota's elder brother is away in America in a baseball tournament, she turns all of her affection to Naota himself.  She often names things, even innanimate objects "Ta-kun", these things ranging from Naota, kittens, or even the central power cell of a robot...

Kamon Nandaba:  Poor Naota's unbelievably perverted father.  He lusts after Haruko in the all the worst ways, and seems willing to do anything to get her for himself.

Eri Ninamori:  The president of the school student council, Ninamori refuses to be called anything but that.  Her parents are going through a scandalous divorce, seeing as her father is the mayor, and Ninamori does something drastic to get them back together.  In her cheating to get the lead role of the school performance of "Puss an' Boots," she drags Naota into the acting, and gets herself possesed by a robot in the process.

Gaku Manabe and Masahi Masamune:  Two of Naota's friends and classmates.  Although they play little role in the television series, they're often thrown in for comic relief.

Kanchi:  This is the first Robot that emerges from Naota's head.  It is an excellant fighter, and the true wielder of the "Atticus" guitar.  Kanchi is not only a fighter, but a maid/housekeeper, forced into this by Naota's father and grandfather.  Although the Nandabas try to disguise Kanchi as a television set, his constant flying off and destroying of locals' vehicles often contradicts this theory.

Amarou:  Also known as "Eyebrows", for that is definitely his most pronounced feature.  Having lost his genuine facial hair in a previous battle against Haruko, Amarou now overcompensates with eyebrows larger than mangos.  He is the head detective for the Interstellar Immigrants.

*By the way, everyone, I changed the order of all of the characters' names.  In Japan, the order goes Last name, and then first name, because the readings are all right to left.  To prevent confusion, I switched it so that all you American anime fans can know exactly what the first name is, and why they're being called what.  Another point of major confusion-- Classmates and even friends call each other by the last names until they really get to know each other.  Calling someone by their first name in Japan means a lot more than in America.*
